Albania hides canyons

Deep gorges with turquoise waters, cliffs that almost touch above your head, wild rivers and silence broken only by the rush of the current. Osum Canyon is the longest on the Balkans, Gjipe accessible only on foot or by boat, Langarica hides thermal springs right between the rocks, and Holta will guide you through narrow crevices. And that’s just the beginning of the list. Albanian canyons are one of the best reasons to venture inland — far from beaches and closer to the real Albania.
Gjipe Canyon
A wild gorge that opens directly onto the pebble beach of Gjipe. The canyon is accessible on foot from the car park above the beaches — the walk takes about 30 minutes and leads through a narrow passage between the rocks.

Beyond the beach, the canyon continues deeper into the mountains and is worth exploring. Above the entrance to the canyon stands the Monastery of St. Theodore.
Nivica Canyon
One of the most dramatic views in all of Albania. From the village of Nivicë, a chasm opens up deeper than 400 metres with waterfalls plunging into the void.

Langarica Canyon
A gem near Përmet. A crystal-clear river winds between the rocks and flows into thermal springs in Bënje — a natural jacuzzi in the middle of nature.

Access is via a stone Ottoman bridge from the 18th century. The combination of bathing in thermal springs and walking through the canyon is our favourite day trip in the south.
Osum Canyon
The longest canyon on the Balkans stretches for over 26 kilometres and in some places squeezes the river between walls over 80 metres high

A rafting or rubber boat trip through rapids and under waterfalls is an experience you won’t forget. The entrance to the canyon is from the village of Çorovodë.
Holta Canyon
A natural wonder located in central Albania, near the village of Gramsh.

Holta Canyon was carved into the rock by the Holtë river over thousands of years. The canyon is approximately 3 kilometres long, in some places only a few metres wide and the rock walls rise up to 100 metres high.
Grunas
It is located in the Albanian Alps near the village of Theth.

It is known for its narrow rock walls and wild mountain landscape. The canyon is formed by the Shalë river and is among the most photogenic places in northern Albania.
Bicaj
A few kilometres south of the city of Kukës hides the little-known Bicajit Canyon.

The gorge measures approximately 2.5 kilometres, in places narrowing to just four metres wide and its rock walls climb to heights of 300 metres. It feels as though the earth itself has torn open to reveal its raw heart.

- Gateway to the mountains and Lake Skadar: The north is dominated by the historic city of Shkodër (Skadar) located on the shore of the largest Balkan lake. Above the city rises Rozafa Fortress, which offers panoramic views of the confluence of three rivers and the beginning of mountain massifs.
- Albanian Alps (Prokletije): From the northern coast, the majestic Albanian Alps are within reach. Villages such as Theth or Valbonë are starting points for the finest treks in the country. This area is home to wild peaks, deep valleys and the iconic Grunas waterfall.
- Adrenaline in nature: For adventure seekers, the wild Holta Canyon is an ideal destination. It offers a unique passage through narrow rocky gorges with turquoise waters and thermal springs. However, when planning a visit to the canyon, it is essential to monitor the weather forecast, as flash floods pose a risk during rainfall.
